Abstract:
In August 1944, just a few weeks after the liberation of eastern Poland, the Centralna Żydowska Komisja Historyczna was established to collect testimonies on the Holocaust in order to raise awareness of Nazi crimes, punish perpetrators, and memorialize those who perished. After the liberation of Poland, the main office of the Commission was established in Łódź, with branches in many other cities. The Commission, under the leadership of Philip Friedman, published books and articles on the Holocaust in Poland. In 1947 the main office moved to Warsaw, but later that year the activities of the Commission were greatly restricted by the communist government. Notes that many members of the Commission were historians and, in addition to collecting testimonies, they also discovered several archives after the war. Pp. 61-72 contain a Hebrew translation of a questionnaire used by the Commission for Holocaust testimonies.
