Abstract:
Based on the Inquisition record, recounts the story of Menahem (Abenyule?) born ca. 1486 in Galicia, who left Spain with his father in 1492. After reaching Morocco, his father died. The boy was apprenticed to merchants. At the age of ca. 16 he travelled to Sardinia, converted to Catholicism, and was named Bartolomé. Returning to Spain, he married the daughter of a Converso and settled in Talavera de la Reina. In 1525, in conversation with two Muslim slaves from Morocco, he praised Judaism and denigrated Christianity. The visiting Inquisitor heard of this and charged Menahem with heresy. In October 1525 the Toledo Inquisition sentenced him to two years' imprisonment, confiscation of property (his wife later sued for aid for herself and her five children), and wearing a special garment. After six weeks, Menahem escaped from prison, apparently to Portugal. For this crime he was tried a second time in absentia and burned in effigy in November 1527.
