Abstract:
Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848), a philosopher and mathematician in Prague, gave a sermon ("Von dem Betragen gegen die jüdische Religion") in the church of the University of Carl-Ferdinand in 1809 against the discrimination of the Jews in Bohemia. His views were consonant with those of C.W. Dohm: the Jews have many negative traits, but it is the oppression and restrictions against them which are to blame; the only way to improve the Jews is to grant them full civil rights and to enable them to get an education. Bolzano's views on the solution of the "Jewish question" are contrasted with those of Fichte. Describes, also, the pogrom in Prague in 1848, which occurred in the wake of the revolution in the country, and was perpetrated by Czechs.
