Father's work as a waiter and restaurant owner; refusal to organize Bar-Mitzvah celebration; escape from parents' home at age of 17; attendance of art school and apprenticeship as painter; setting designer at Piscator's theater; work with Bertold Brecht, Walter Mehring, Hanns Eisler, Werner Finck; artist milieu in Berlin around 1930; emigration to Austria in 1933 and Switzerland in 1934; work at the Zurich "Schauspielhaus"; has to leave Switzerland and emigrates to USA in 1938; as setting designer in New York show business; visit to Europe in 1949.
