Abstract:
Franz Novak, an Austrian, was Eichmann's assistant at the RSHA, in charge of the deportations of the Jews from Germany and other countries (Hungary, Poland) to the camps. He was a typical "desk-perpetrator", who never saw a camp or the extermination process. After the war he lived openly in the vicinity of Vienna, and was tried for the first time in 1961 in the wake of the Eichmann trial. Despite his four trials (the last one in 1972), Novak was not convicted and never felt guilty for his actions.
