Abstract:
In February 2007, Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel was sentenced in Mannheim to five years in prison for public incitement, defamation, and desecration of the memory of Holocaust victims. Zundel, born in 1939 in Wildbach, Germany, was extradited from Canada in 2005 and arrested in Mannheim on an outstanding warrant from 2003. Many disorderly Zundel sympathizers were present at the opening of the trial in November 2005, which ended in suspension. At the reopening in March 2006, Zundel's defense lawyer was found to be not acceptable; the lawyer who replaced him quoted passages from "Mein Kampf". On the day of conviction, the right-wing parties and press complained about a lack of freedom of opinion and a limitation on the defendant's rights.
