Abstract:
Discusses Herzl's reactions, as recorded in his journal, to Dühring's "Die Judenfrage", noting that Herzl dated his own consciousness of the "Jewish question" to his encounter with this book at the age of 22. Sketches Dühring's failed university career and his transition from socialism to racist antisemitism. Herzl acknowledges that some of Dühring's perceptions of Jews are accurate, but counters many of his allegations (such as Jewish usurers' enrichment at the expense of Christians) from his own knowledge of Jewish history. He rejects with horror Dühring's "solution": breaking Jewish financial power and domination of the press, the exclusion of Jews from society, and the repeal of emancipation.
