Abstract:
Summarizes the reactions in Catholic and Jewish circles to the Vatican document "We Remember" and the Pope's prayer for forgiveness of 12 March 2000. Both Catholics and Jews criticized the document for confessing only the guilt of members of the Church and not of the Church itself; thus it stopped short of formulations already contained in declarations of Vatican II and in statements by German and French bishops. The text of the prayer was also inadequate; it was lauded in the European press because of the spirit of humility in which it was spoken, but made little impression on Jews. However, the Pope's visit to Israel in March 2000 and his gestures of empathy and brotherhood at Yad Vashem and the Western Wall were symbols that went far beyond the limitations of the words spoken and won the love of the Jewish people. But both Catholics and Jews still have much work to do to develop understanding for one another.
