Abstract:
Surveys the history of the Jewish community in Istanbul during the 15th-16th centuries, where Jews lived in prosperity. An interruption in the liberal treatment of the Jews occurred during the regime of Sultan Bayazid II (1481) when newly established synagogues were closed and Jewish officials and physicians were pressured to convert to Islam. Discusses blood libels in the 16th century which were quashed by inquiries, and the innocence of the Jewish community was proved.
