Abstract:
When arbitration forced Slovakia to cede large parts of its territory to Hungary (5 November 1938), the Tiso government blamed the Jews, citing a pro-Hungarian demonstration by a few hundred Jews in Bratislava. Anti-Jewish riots broke out all over the country. By government order, ca. 7,500 Jews were deported on November 4 to the territory that was about to pass to Hungary; their property was confiscated. The Hungarians drove the Jews back to the border, where for a month they remained in camps under miserable conditions. Finally Slovakia, mainly because of economic considerations, took them back, allowing those with residence rights to return home and reclaim their property, and interning the others until they could emigrate.
