Abstract:
Describes Austrian unwillingness to accept the return of Jewish refugees after 1945. The authorities processed their applications slowly and reluctantly, and withheld all assistance. Of the political parties, only the communists reinstated returnees in leading positions, since there were few other communist survivors; but they too were infected by the anti-Zionism of the 1950s. In the Socialist Party almost all posts were occupied by those who had remained in Austria, and competitors returning from exile were not welcome. The population accused the returning Jews of having lived comfortably abroad while Austrians suffered, or even of being traitors to Austria. None seemed to remember the expulsions and the Holocaust. The press published antisemitic articles with impunity. Thus, the Jews necessarily kept to themselves and avoided mentioning their past for fear of antisemitic reactions.
