Abstract:
Based on the observation that anti-Judaism in Visigothic Spain was strongly influenced by Byzantine anti-Jewish polemics, discusses the possibility of similar influences in Muslim Spain. Focuses on the correspondence from ca. 840 between the Christian Albarus of Cordoba and the Jew Eleazar, the only source of anti-Jewish polemics from the period 700-1100. Albarus and Eleazar, a convert from Christianity to Judaism identified as the Diakon Bodo from Pfalz, became friends after the latter settled in Cordoba. In his letters, Albarus tries to bring Eleazar back to Christianity; when he fails, he attacks the Jews and uses rude anti-Jewish terms of abuse. Notes that, while Albarus is recurring to the anti-Jewish polemics of the ancient Church, no specific Byzantine influence can be found in his letters.
