Abstract:
Discusses the refusal of Gollwitz, a village of 405 inhabitants in Brandenburg, to accept a quota of 60 Jewish immigrants from Kirgizstan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in 1997. The villagers expressed fear of change in the nature of their community, an increase in crime, and a worsening of already serious unemployment. Human rights activists and the Geman and international press attacked this attitude as xenophobic. The prime minister of Brandenburg, Manfred Stolpe, expressed understanding for the villagers, setting off a public debate with Ignaz Bubis. Comments that xenophobia and antisemitism are endemic especially in rural areas of Germany, and Gollwitz is an example for everywhere.
