Abstract:
Analyzes the connection between conversion to Christianity in 19th century Austria and antisemitism. Freedom of religion became law in Austria in 1868. However, conversions continued, rising sharply after 1919. The phenomenon was always linked to political events and antisemitic measures, including the Anschluss and the "Kristallnacht" pogrom in 1938 when Jews hoped to evade persecution by converting. Compares the number of conversions in Berlin and in Vienna with relation to the conditions laid down by the Church (e.g. in Berlin children were converted without their parents, while in Austria at least one of the parents had to convert).
