Abstract:
Points out parallel views in Herzl's utopian book and in the Jewish aims as imagined in the "Protocols". The "Protocols" assumes there is solidarity among all the Jews in the world; Herzl pleads for it. Both books see antisemitism as a major incentive for this solidarity. Both identify the Jews with modernity and progress, and believe in the efficacy of planning - Herzl positively, the "Protocols" negatively. Both Herzl and the wealthy Jews in the "Protocols" distrust the masses, but they plan to instrumentalize them for their own purposes. For the "Protocols", Jewish power is a reality, for Herzl it is a vision; both are far removed from the reality of a scattered, fragmented, and mostly poverty stricken Jewish people, whose utter lack of power proved fatal.
