Abstract:
"Was ist das Wesen und die Aufgabe des Judentums? Das ist die Kernfrage, die das bedeutende Lebenswerk von Samuel Hirsch (1815–1889) prägt. Die Antwort findet sich in seinen zahlreichen Schriften und in seinem Wirken als liberaler Rabbiner in Dessau, Luxemburg und Philadelphia, wo er zu einer der führenden Persönlichkeiten der Reformbewegung wird. Der Sohn eines einfachen Viehhändlers aus Thalfang entwickelt mit Hegels Dialektik eine komplexe Religionsphilosophie. Als „absolute Religion“ sieht er das Judentum dazu erwählt, als „Licht für die Völker“ den Glauben an den einen Gott über die Zeiten hinweg zu tragen. Hirsch beschreibt das Judentum als die Religion von Freiheit, Toleranz, Liebe und Humanität. Über alle Bekenntnisse und Religionsgemeinschaften hinweg besitzt sein Leitspruch noch heute Gültigkeit: „Verständigung ist das Losungswort unserer Zeit“." (Verlagsinformation)
