Abstract:
Describes changes in the legal status of the Jews in the Holy Roman Empire during the 14th-17th centuries. From being servants of the Imperial treasury ("servitus camerae imperialis"), which ensured them the protection of the Emperor but allowed him to exploit them for fiscal purposes, they came under the control of the local rulers. In the Late Middle Ages the guilds expressed negative attitudes toward the Jews' concentration in trade, whereas the rulers were interested in collecting taxes from them. With the deterioration of the Jews' economic situation as a result of a persisting fiscal exploitation and of growing Christian competition, during the late 15th-16th centuries they were expelled from many German cities and territories. After their return to some localities, their legal status was controlled by local rulers, based on edicts of "Jews' regulations", under which their position was highly insecure.
