Abstract:
Near the end of his life (in 1968), Bauer, Hesse's Attorney General, who initiated and directed the prosecution of war criminals in the Auschwitz trial in Frankfurt (1963-65), is said to have expressed regret that he tried to turn the trial into an educational event on the Holocaust in general, thus prolonging the procedures and necessitating the testimonies of thousands of witnesses. Agrees that preparation of the trial over many years was counterproductive; in particular, time dimmed the witnesses' memories. However, the testimony of so many eyewitnesses was required because, while documents give historians a good general picture of the crimes committed in Auschwitz, they do not contain evidence against individual perpetrators.
