Abstract:
Discusses a pastoral letter protesting the persecution of Jews, signed by all bishops of Denmark in September 1943, and the role of the Bishop of Copenhagen, Hans Fuglsang-Damgaard (1890-1979), in the rescue of Denmark's Jews one month later. During the Nazi occupation Fuglsang-Damgaard cooperated closely with the resistance and initiated the pastoral letter as soon as he found out about the German deportation plans. The Jewish congregation was also informed and Torah scrolls were moved from the Copenhagen synagogue to the cathedral. The pastoral letter urged all Danes to protect the Jews and contributed to the rescue of the vast majority of the country's Jews, who either hid or fled to Sweden. Analyzes the biblical/theological, Christian/ethical, and constitutional/legal arguments presented in the letter. Shows connections to the German Confessional Church. The Danish Lutheran Church, however, went much further than Pastor Martin Niemöller's movement in Germany, which never openly condemned the Nazis' treatment of the Jews and the racist doctrine.
