Abstract:
Chronicles the failure of the German Protestant Church and its welfare organization, the Innere Mission, to aid non-Aryan Protestants endangered by the Nazi regime. The Innere Mission compromised with Nazism on every issue, both because many of its own workers were German Christians and in order not to endanger its activities. Efforts by members of the Confessing Church, especially Marga Meusel, to enlist the Innere Mission on behalf of non-Aryans, failed to receive support from the Central Committee. Almost all institutions run by the organization's nursing order (Diakonen and Diakonissen) refused to accept non-Aryan trainees, were reluctant to care for non-Aryans, and later complied with Nazi demands to transfer these patients to special institutions from which they were transported to their deaths. Initiatives by Central Committee vice-president Paul-Gerhard Braune to set up a self-help organization for non-Aryans also failed. A few private agencies attempted to fill the vacuum, chiefly Pastor Heinrich Grüber's bureau to aid emigration. Contrasts the Protestant Church's failure to aid the emigration of non-Aryans with the relative effectiveness of the Catholic Church.
