Abstract:
Surveys the situation of the Jews of Belgium from the 1750s to 1791, under Austrian rule. States that the existence of Jewish communities depended on fluctuations in the political situation. The Austrian authorities promoted settlement only of those Jews who contributed to the economic development of the country, but local authorities in many towns protested against Jewish settlement. Surveys consecutive decrees of Joseph II and responses to it of the towns' authorities, and the actual situation in the most important towns.
