Abstract:
Presents the text (Judeo-Arabic with French translation) of an anonymous, recently discovered "qasîda" (an elegiac poem) lamenting the expulsion of the Jews from Oran in 1669. From its conquest by Fernando II in 1509 until 1669, Oran remained the only place in the Hispanic world where Jews were tolerated. Their rapid increase worried the Christians, who tried to expel them on several occasions in the course of the 17th century. The massive expulsion in 1669, initiated by the Governor-General, the marquis de Los Vélez, was carried out according to the example of the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. Some verses of the lament are written in the first person and describe the hardships that the 466 expelled Jews suffered before they reached a safe haven in Nice. Posits that the "qasida" was written either in North Africa or in exile by one of the victims of the tragedy.
Note:
Edition of the Judeo-Arabic text (ms. Opp. Add. 4-85) and its French translation.
