Abstract:
Surveys the most important events in the history of the Jews in Grenoble and Vienne (Dauphiné), including religious and economic anti-Judaism which led to the Jews' status of pariah in the Middle Ages (e.g. the first interdictions of the Church Councils, development of the deicide accusation from the 11th century, Church attacks against usurers from the 12th century). Most of the Jews left the Dauphiné during the 15th century, due to persecutions following the Black Death in 1348. Underlines specific characteristics of the Dauphiné region in comparison with the Kingdom of France, and the Jews' importance in the economic development of the region. Surveys the presence of the Jews from the 18th century, mentioning the emancipation period and the growth of the community in Grenoble at the beginning of the 20th century. During the Second World War, many Jews found refuge in Grenoble up to 1942.
