Abstract:
Documents from the Carolingian period reflect the steady deterioration of the status of the Jews as the influence of Christianity grew. Following a relatively successful integration during the era of the Roman Empire, the Jewish communities were confronted with growing opposition to their existence, by the Church, during the 6th-7th centuries. However, the impression of Jewish autonomy was preserved. Ecclesiastical legislation forbidding social and professional contact was consistently respected until the end of the 9th century, when the Church initiated antisemitic measures.
