Abstract:
Describes the ecumenical problem which arises in Christian-Jewish relations because the cross is seen by Christians as a symbol of love and redemption and by the Jews as a symbol of fear and hatred, a reminder of murder and oppression at the hands of the Christians throughout the centuries. Discusses the charge of deicide against the Jews, and the cross's significance in Christian theology. Notes reluctance on the part of some Jews today to engage in Christian-Jewish dialogue because of the barrier raised by the cross. Calls for reconciliation with Judaism and the Jewish people, including Christian repentance and reparation which will dissipate the Jewish fear and hatred of the cross and eventually lead to a special affection between Jews and Christians.
