Abstract:
Contests the prevalent view in Italy during the 19th-20th centuries that antisemitism was the exception rather than the norm in that country. Contends that 1988, the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Racial Laws, was a turning-point in Italians' willingness to confront their antisemitic attitudes towards the Jews. Regarding the events of the Holocaust, after the war the complicity of the Italian authorities was minimized; views this silence as the refusal to confront Italian collaboration with the Nazis. Cites the example of the murder of 75 Jews by SS officers Kappler and Priebke, interpreted by Italians as having been perpetrated entirely by the Germans. Compares the reactions of the Italian populace to the Racial Laws of 1938 with those of the French during the Occupation. Attributes the refusal of Italians to confront their history of collaboration to the influence of liberalism, fascism, and the Vatican.
