Abstract:
Describes the situation of the Jews in France from the 1920s to the end of World War II. Underlines the heterogeneity of the Jewish population in the interwar period and differences between French Jews and foreign Jews who settled in France in the 20th century. Surveys various forms of antisemitism in the 1930s, from latent to violent forms. During World War II, antisemitic measures began with the Statute of the Jews, imposed by the Vichy government from October 1940. Deals with the reaction of the Jews to those measures and the lack of solidarity between French Jews and foreign Jews living in France. Surveys the main events related to the fate of the Jews, culminating in roundups and deportations. These events provoked three important debates in France after the war: on the responsibility of the Vichy regime, on Jewish resistance, and on the attitude of the French people concerning the "Jewish question".
