Abstract:
Surveys the dispersion of Sephardic Jews after the expulsions from Spain and Portugal. Describes the fate of the Conversos who remained in those countries - the prejudices against them, interdictions to take part in Christian functions, the anti-Jewish statutes, and the activities of the Inquisition. Relates the establishment of viable Jewish communities under Islamic rule and in Christian Europe, and deals briefly with the conflicts with the indigent populations. Concludes that the Sephardic world continued to exist in the Diaspora, with spiritual centers in Safed and Jerusalem.
