Abstract:
The wave of antisemitism surrounding the Dreyfus Affair occurred in the context of the economic depression after 1873 and of the massive emigration of Eastern European Jews after 1880. Nationalist and antisemitic leagues were founded by Paul Déroulède and Jules Guérin in 1889, and many newspapers, including the Catholic "La Croix", published anti-Jewish declarations. Gives a short account of Dreyfus's trial. A pro-Dreyfus defense group was constituted among intellectuals, anti-establishment artists, and even the military. The Dreyfus Affair revealed a latent conflict between Catholics, nationalists, and monarchists on the one hand, and the defenders of Republican values on the other (mostly intellectuals, Protestants, Freemasons, and minorities), a conflict which is still alive today.
