Abstract:
This article addresses one again the history of the Jews in Provence at the time of the Black Plague after the seminal study of Joseph Shatzmiller, published in 1974 on the same topic. It adds new documents, particularly the record of the restitution of precious objects stolen during the sacking of the Jews’ houses of La Baume les Sisteron and many deeds throwing light on the personality of Dayas Quinoni, the man who wrote the account of the slaughter of the Jews of La Baume on a piece of parchment kept in the National Library of Wien. Dayas Quinoni belonged to the group of officials in charge of the collection and the management of the tallia judeorum. In its second part, the article deals with that tax established by Charles I of Anjou and explores the ways of its collection and the modifications introduced during the first part of the fourteenth century in the organization of the 'Jews’ community of the counties of Provence and Forcalquier'. Only one document from this administration was preserved. It is an account for the years 1351-1352 written by the syndics of the Jewish community of the royal demesne and sent to the treasurer of the county. It illustrates both the Jews’ sufferings during the plague and the part played at that time by Dayas Quinoni.
