Abstract:
Examines the impact of Vichy antisemitic legislation on the Jewish population of the Charente-Maritime region, based on recently-discovered archival material. Despite the insignificance of the local Jewish community, half of whom were immigrants from Alsace-Lorraine, Turkey, and Central Europe, a service for Jewish affairs was created. Assesses the role of the police commissioner, Georges Malick, who was zealous in enforcing the antisemitic ordinances. From late 1941, Jews were purged from regional positions, their enterprises were liquidated, and foreign Jews were evicted. Their status declined further in 1942, with the expulsion of the Jewish population to a camp in Poitiers. In January 1944, the few remaining Jews were deported to Auschwitz. Concludes that the Nazi plan to rid the region of its Jews was successful due to the collaboration of local institutions.
