Abstract:
Zionism became a major topic of public debate in the Ottoman Empire after the counter-revolution of April 1909 against the Young Turks had been crushed. In a climate favorable to the spread of conspiracy theories, the renowed intellectual Ebüzziya Tavfik (1849-1913) launched a fierce anti-Zionist campaign in his daily paper and bi-monthly review, introducing Zionism as a subject in the Turkish press. Between 1909-11 Tavfik, the author of the first history of the Jews in the Ottoman Empire (1888), wrote ca. 20 anti-Zionist articles, characterized by a more or less antisemitic tone. Traces the development of Tevfik's opinions on the "Jewish question" as reflected in these articles. He viewed the Jews as possessing great financial power, and European antisemitism as a reaction to this phenomenon. However, his antisemitism should not be compared to European antisemitism in the latter half of the 19th century. Tavfik's dislike of Jews did not translate into a political program, nor did he attribute Turkey's problems to the presence of the Jews. His words were aimed at certain Jews, in response to the Zionist project.
