Abstract:
Presents samples of the thousands of letters received by Zola and members of the Dreyfus family from "ordinary people" in France and abroad between 1897-99. Letters written by French Jews testify to Jewish shock in face of the eruption of antisemitism in the press and the streets during the Affair. However, the Jews viewed the Affair as the fruit of many years of nationalistic and antisemitic incitement. The Dreyfusard campaign won the support of French Jews, but many remained passive, partly for fear of harming the cause if they sided with Dreyfus as Jews. They therefore expressed their solidarity first and foremost as French citizens.
