Abstract:
Describes the arrival of the first Jews in Mexico after the expulsion from Spain (although the Edict of Expulsion officially applied also to the colonies). At first the Mexican Apostolic Inquisition persecuted the newcomers. On the basis of trial documents, describes the life stories of several Crypto-Jews accused of Judaizing between 1528-71 and some of the trials. Two Jews were burned at the stake in 1528. The activity of the Inquisition diminished after the initial period, and the community was able to develop in relative freedom, despite the efforts of the Inquisitor Zumarraga. However, the introduction of a tribunal of the Holy Office in 1571 resulted in renewed and more severe persecution.
