Abstract:
A critical analysis of those writings and ideas of Charles Péguy - French writer, poet, philosopher - which deal with the "problem" of the Jewish presence in modern Europe. In "Notre jeunesse" (1911) Péguy refuted the anti-Dreyfusard accusations against the Jews found especially in the myth of the "Jewish syndicate" which was part of the ideology of Action Française. Péguy opposed, as well, the accusation that the Jews are fomenters of modernity. Although he rejected the "modern world" (including "money" and the "press"), in his thought there were no antisemitic elements. On the contrary, Péguy conceived the modern world not as one conquered by the Jews, but as a world against the Jews and against other cultures. He judged this world as barbaric.
