Abstract:
Examines Pope Pius X's silence during the Beilis case (1911-13), despite appeals by highly placed persons for intervention on behalf of falsely accused Jews. After Lord Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild and the Duke of Norfolk had asked Cardinal Merry del Val to confirm papal documents denouncing Jewish blood libels presented in Beilis's defense, the Pope was approached by the Italian deputy Leone Romanin Jacur in November 1913 and by Archduchess Marie-Thérèse de Bragance three months later. Points out that, in his answer to Lord Rothschild, Pius X promised to use all possible means to attend to the consequences of senseless Catholic fanaticism, while deploring to the Archduchess that he could do nothing for the Jews. Exploring the reasons for the Pope's responses, emphasizes his strict theological background and his suspicion of the anti-Catholic Tsarist regime.
