Abstract:
Traces the struggle of Dreyfusards with antisemitism at the time of the Dreyfus Affair. As a result of their collective protest in 1898, the "intellectuals" became a distinctive group in society. Surveys the views and writings of intellectuals engaged in Dreyfus' defense, Jews and non-Jews, among them Bernard Lazare, Émile Zola, Gabriel Monod, Albert Réville, and others. Discusses, also, members of the anti-Dreyfusard camp, e.g. Maurice Barrès and Ferdinand Brunetière, and their reasoning. Shows how, especially among moderate intellectuals, antisemitism developed in the direction of political ideology. The Jews joined the struggle at a time when fighting against antisemitism also meant a fight for reason, justice, and democracy. Considers the refutation of antisemitism a "foundation act" of the intellectuals.
