Abstract:
A lecture given at the SBL International Meeting, Lausanne, July 1997. Compares the conflicting versions of the Passion in the Gospels, as well as their portrayal of the Sanhedrin and the role of Pontius Pilate during Jesus' trial. Argues that the blame for Jesus' death placed on the Jews, more explicit in the Book of Acts than in the others, was subsequently exploited by clerics as testimony and justification of antisemitism. Rejects interpretations that attribute to Paul the accusation that the Jews killed Jesus. Underscores the evolution of subjective and anti-Jewish readings of the text by historians and theologians after Paul's time.
