Abstract:
Analyzes the approach of two journals published in the city of Quebec, the French-language "Le Soleil" and the English-language "Quebec Chronicle Telegraph", to the issue of Jewish immigration to Canada in order to detect if they were antisemitic or not. The orientation of both was mainly informative, without any specific ideology. In both, the "Jewish question" appeared in 1933 in the context of problems related to the immigration of Jews from Nazi Germany. Both journals opposed Jewish immigration due to the economic crisis and fear of Jewish communists. States that "Le Soleil" was more violent in its opposition to their immigration. In 1938, during the Evian Conference, these themes arose again. "Le Soleil" vigorously opposed immigration, while the "Quebec Chronicle Telegraph" was not openly against it. States that English-language journals outside of Quebec were favorable to Jewish immigration. Explains that the passive attitude of the "Quebec Chronicle Telegraph" can be explained by fear of the Francophone majority in the province of Quebec.
