Abstract:
The main aim of imperial Roman restrictive legislation in the 4th century was to prevent any possibility of Jewish proselytizing. However, Judaism was recognized as a legal religion and Jews were treated less severely than pagans or heretics. States that the developing theological struggle between Jews and Christians had an influence on Roman legislation which is difficult to define. Antisemitic expressions are extant in Roman law of the time, which may reflect intolerance and hostility toward Judaism, but the legal codes were compiled by officials and Church historians and may not represent actual Gentile-Jewish relations.
