Abstract:
A history of the author's father's family, traced from late medieval Spain through the Ottoman Empire after the expulsion, to present-day France. Ch. 4 (pp. 127-157), "Drancy", relates the fate of some members of the family during the Shoah. Sultana Barzilay, born in Constantinople in 1912, was arrested in Paris in August 1942 and interned in Drancy. After five months she was allowed to leave for Turkey as one of 3,000 Turkish Jews released to neutral or German-allied countries. Allegra Frances (b. 1891) and her son Robert (b. 1919), of Turkish origin, were arrested in Paris in 1943 and deported to Auschwitz via Drancy. Allegra was gassed upon arrival but Robert survived in the Monowitz camp. Two sisters, Marie Bally and Fortunée Halfon, born in 1911 and 1912 in Brousse, were arrested in Bayonne in January 1944 and deported via Drancy to Auschwitz, where they were killed
