Abstract:
Claims that two attitudes are expressed towards the Jews in the Latvian press: tolerance compared to intolerance, friendship in contrast to hostility. States that during the regime of the Tsar antisemitism arose from economic competition. Even religious antisemitism, which considered the Jewish people as the enemy of Christianity, had its roots in economic interests. Describes the period of the democratic republic between 1918-34, characterized by a new antisemitic wave evoked by right-wing conservative and fascist parties, including also national and socialist elements. Mentions the dictatorial regime of Karlis Ulmanis (1934-40) during which antisemitism was not officially condoned and publications with antisemitic content were censored, but the press reflected only the official point of view, and antisemitism continued to exist.
