Abstract: As a Jew in postwar Germany, Yascha Mounk felt like a foreigner in his own country. When he mentioned that he is Jewish, some made anti-Semitic jokes or talked about the superiority of the Aryan race. Others, sincerely hoping to atone for the country's past, fawned over him with a forced friendliness he found just as alienating. Vivid and fascinating, Stranger in My Own Country traces the contours of Jewish life in a country still struggling with the legacy of the Third Reich and portrays those who, inevitably, continue to live in its shadow. Marshaling an extraordinary range of material into a lively narrative, Mounk surveys his countrymen's responses to "the Jewish question." Examining history, the story of his family, and his own childhood, he shows that anti-Semitism and far-right extremism have long coexisted with self-conscious philo-Semitism in postwar Germany. But of late a new kind of resentment against Jews has come out in the open. Unnoticed by much of the outside world, the desire for a ̮finish lineŁ that would spell a definitive end to the country's obsession with the past is feeding an emphasis on German victimhood. Mounk shows how, from the government's pursuit of a less "apologetic" foreign policy to the way the country̷s idea of the Volk makes life difficult for its immigrant communities, a troubled nationalism is shaping Germany's future.

Abstract: "In the short span of 17 years, the first 17 years of his life, he was known as Peter Korytowski, Pierre Engglenger and Pierre Boivin, depending on who was hunting him at the time. Nine years old and his world had collapsed. It was 1939 and Hitler had unleashed the Blitzkrieg--bombs were exploding around him, changing everything. This moment of terror catapulted him into an epic nine-year adventure during the Second World War. He was forced to abandon his home, his family and his childhood. Like a bad dream from which he could not awake, he began an alternate existence--that of a refugee, prey for the Nazis, part of old French nobility, a resistance participant and a rebellious orphan. But most of all, he learned how to be a survivor"--Provided by publisher

Abstract: Theodore Ross was nine years old when he moved with his mother from New York City to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once there, his mother decided, for both personal and spiritual reasons, to have her family pretend not to be Jewish. He went to an Episcopal school, where he studied the New Testament, sang in the choir, and even took Communion. Later, as an adult, he wondered: Am I still Jewish? Seeking an answer, Ross traveled around the country and to Israel, visiting a wide variety of Jewish communities. From ̮Crypto-JewsŁ in New Mexico and secluded ultra-devout Orthodox towns in upstate New York to a rare Classical Reform congregation in Kansas City, Ross tries to understand himself by experiencing the diversity of Judaism. Quirky and self-aware, introspective and impassioned, Am I a Jew? is a story about the universal struggle to define a relationship (or lack thereof) with religion.

Abstract: In the middle of New York City lies a neighborhood where all secrets are valuable, all assets are liquid, and all deals are sealed with a blessing rather than a contract. Welcome to the diamond district. Ninety percent of all diamonds that enter America pass through these few blocks, but the inner workings of this mysterious world are known only to the people who inhabit it. In Precious Objects, twenty-six-year-old journalist Alicia Oltuski, the daughter and granddaughter of diamond dealers, seamlessly blends family narrative with literary reportage to reveal the fascinating secrets of the diamond industry and its madcap characters: an Elvis-impersonating dealer, a duo of diamond-detective brothers, and her own eccentric father. With insight and drama, Oltuski limns her family's diamond-paved move from communist Siberia to a displaced persons camp in post - World War II Germany to New York's diamond district, exploring the connections among Jews and the industry, the gem and its lore, and the exotic citizens of this secluded world. Entertaining and illuminating, Precious Objects offers an insider̷s look at the history, business, and society behind one of the world̷s most coveted natural resources, providing an unforgettable backstage pass to an extraordinary and timeless show.

Abstract: About 5,000 children were imprisoned in the Kaunas Ghetto from 1941-1944, of whom some 250-300 were smuggled out of the ghetto, hidden by Gentiles and survived. This book is a collective memory of events that happened to Kaunas Jewry during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. It contains 50 stories of people who suffered through the Holocaust in their childhood in Kaunas. Most of the contributors are writing about their ordeal for the first time, after more then 60 years of silence. The stories cover the background of the families before the war, life in the Ghetto, and the main tragic events that happened in Kaunas during three years of fascist regime in Lithuania. The memoirs describe how children were smuggled out of the Ghetto and their experiences and feelings living with the gentiles who sheltered them.

Abstract: "Glidden, a progressive American Jew who is sharply critical of Israeli policies vis-á-vis the Occupied Territories, went on an all-expense-paid 'birthright' trip to Israel in an attempt to discover some grand truths at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict. This graphic memoir tells the touching and often funny story of her utter failure to do so."--Amazon.com

Abstract: Two cousins relate their experiences with Bielskiís partisan brigade in war-torn Russia during the Second World War. Natives of Novogrodek, part of present-day Belarus, they describe Jewish life before the Holocaust and furnish a most moving account of how a thriving and prosperous Jewish center was decimated by the Nazis and local collaborators. Initial joy when their hometown was taken over by the Soviet Union disappeared when the Germans ran the Russians out of town and started implementing policies to eradicate all Jews and anything Jewish. Dov (Berl), the elder of the cousins, whose account comprises the first section of the book, lost his immediate family in the early days of German occupation and escaped from ghetto life in November 1942 to join the partisans in the dense forests of the area. He joined the Kalinin brigade and spent the rest of the war fighting the Germans and Russian sympathisers. Jack (Idel), seven years his junior, remained in the ghetto with the remnants of their once-large family. After a failed attempt in December 1942 to escape to reach the partisans - in an episode which nearly cost him his life - Jack joined an escape effort from the ghetto in September 1943, successfully reached the partisans as a member of Bielskiís partisan brigade and was reunited with his cousin. This second section features many original documents from Russian archives and elsewhere, about the partisan bandsí structure and their activities. The authors provide a unique view, not only of actual incidents, but of how two different people react to events and experiences. Updated in this second edition by a new preface and appendix, this is their story: a tale of tragedy, courage and triumph.
