Abstract:
A priest, philosopher, and writer, G.J. Franceschi (1871-1957) was a conservative thinker, one of the exponents of Catholic nationalism in Argentina. As was his whole milieu, he was antisemitic, regarding the Jews as a danger to the Argentinian nation. His early ideas were consonant with those of some fascist ideologists, and his publications of the 1930s contributed to the decision of the Argentinian government to restrict the admission of Jews into the country in 1935. However, he criticized Nazi Germany's policy toward the Jews. In 1952 he visited Israel and became a friend of the state. Paradoxically, scrutiny of Franceschi's writings and public pronouncements shows that despite his loathing of Nazism and fascism, his compassion for Jewish victims of the Holocaust, and his sympathy for Israel, his views retained elements of Catholic antisemitism.
