Abstract:
Discusses the Nazi dream (propagated by Hitler himself) to colonize Eastern Europe with German settlers - i.e. the desire for "Lebensraum", as opposed to the reality of the German implementation of the Holocaust and of the Nazi colonization programs in Ukraine while carrying on a war with the Soviet Union. The Nazi idea was to Germanize all of Eastern Europe, but the plan did not work from the start, mainly because the settlers were simple farmers and had no other training, and some 40% of them did not even know German. Describes some of the failed colonies. Regarding the Holocaust, focuses on the Zhytomyr region, but also describes events in Transnistria and in Odessa.
