Abstract:
Discusses Enrico Castelnuovo's novel "I Moncalvo" (1908) which deals with the lives and fate of two Jewish brothers and their families in Italy. One brother is a rich Jewish financier who wishes to be accepted by the clerical and reactionary aristocracy, and the other is an austere scientist who follows positivist ideas. Both branches of the family represent forms of assimilation. The novel was very popular in its time.
