Antisemitism History 1800-2000
Kurzfassung:
In the German debate of 1879-81 centering on the "Jewish question, " Heinrich von Treitschke accused the Jews of having a harmful influence on German life. His statements were provoked, in part, by his reading of volume eleven of Heinrich Graetz's history of the Jews (see above). While both historians shared a similar view of history, their view of German Jewish history was sharply opposed. Graetz praised Mendelssohn, Boerne, Heine, and other figures who adopted modern values without sacrificing their Jewish identity; Treitschke was willing to accept only Jews who identified completely with German culture. He condemned Boerne and Heine as "orientals" who tried to impose dangerous foreign ideas on German youth. Graetz's expressions of hostility to Christianity and Germany shocked Treitschke and contributed to his antisemitic image of the German Jew.
