Abstract: Discusses both sporadic and continuous contacts between Poles and Jews, as well as differences, contradictions, and antagonisms. The article is based on about 150 memoirs which appeared in postwar Poland and refer to the interwar period, mostly written by Poles (about one quarter of them are by Jews). Describes the stratification of the Jewish population in Poland, their separation from Polish society, and various attitudes of Poles to them, both positive and negative. Among the causes of antisemitism, mentions strong economic competition, influence of the Catholic Church, and the ideology of the Endecja movement. Notes several antisemitic incidents described by various writers. The best relations existed between the assimilated Jewish intelligentsia and the Polish liberal intelligentsia.
Note: Appeared in Polish in "Z historii ludności żydowskiej w Polsce i na Śląsku" (1994) 125-142.
