Abstract: "The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and the subsequent expulsion from Portugal just four years later mark what is traditionally viewed as a watershed moment in Jewish history. Ferdinand and Isabella's strategy of aggressive evangelization - conversion or expulsion - had countless consequences from many points of view. The resulting wave of refugees transformed the geography of the Jewish presence in the Mediterranean basin as well as in central and southern Europe"--

Abstract: The New Ethnic Studies in Latin America aims at going beyond and against much of Jewish Latin American historiography, situating Jewish-Latin Americans in the larger multi-ethnic context of their countries. Senior and junior scholars from various countries joined together to challenge commonly held assumptions, accepted ideas, and stable categories about ethnicity in Latin America in general and Jewish experiences on this continent in particular. This volume brings to the discussions on Jewish life in Latin America less heard voices of women, non-affiliated Jews, and intellectuals. Community institutions are not at center stage, conflicts and tensions are brought to the fore, and a multitude of voices pushes aside images of homogeneity. Authors in this tome look at Jews’ multiple homelands: their country of birth, their country of residence, and their imagined homeland of Zion

Based on archival sources, it explores the Jews' activities as settlers and officials, their role in the new kingdom's economic development, and their rapidly changing relations with the Christian conquerors and the subject Muslims. It dissects the Jewish community's internal social and political struggles while it dealt with the monarchy's heavy fiscal demands. It also considers the controversies surrounding Jewish moneylending and the Jews' embattled position during the rebellions and wars that rocked the kingdom in the fourteenth century. The book is important for students of Jewish history, Spanish history, and interfaith relations in the Middle Ages

Keywords: Christianity and culture ; Christianity and culture ; Ethnic relations ; Jews History 1096-1800 ; Jews ; Social conditions
Abstract: We all live in a community, and it was no different for the Jews and Christians of medieval Germany-or was it? This book draws together disparate threads of Christian and Jewish communal development in an effort to give a deeper understanding to the complex tapestry of Jewish and Christian interaction. In the broad examination presented herein, it is possible to compare the general transformations that affected Jews and Christians both as residents of a shared German society and as residents of their own separate communities. Jews and Christians interacted in a variety of ways, in numerous settings, and at a multitude of levels that defy simple categorization. To label late medieval Germany a period of crisis is too simplisitc, the "Reformation" should not categorically be viewed as the central development in the shift between medieval and early modern times. This book seeks to recontextualize the world of Jewish and Christian relations by bringing together divergent sources not often taken together, but equally important, to inform one another and offer a fuller picture of Jewish and Christian notions of each other and themselves than has been possible up to this point

Abstract: How did Jews in the Netherlands view themselves and how were they viewed by others? This is the single theme around which the twenty-five essays in this volume, written by scholars from the Netherlands, Israel and other countries, revolve. The studies encompass a variety of topics and periods, from the beginning of the Jewish settlement in the Dutch Republic through the Shoah and its aftermath. They include examinations of the Sephardi Jews in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Jews in the periods of Emancipation and Enlightenment, social and cultural encounters between Jews and non-Jews throughout the ages, the image of the Jew in Dutch literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the churches' attitudes toward Jews. Also highlighted are the second World War and its consequences, Dutch Jews in Israel and Israelis in the contemporary Netherlands

Abstract: The material in this publication was compiled over an 18-month period and includes a variety of local, national and international issues and disaggregating Jerusalem's intricate problems. It offers meaningful models that even though they may not yield solutions acceptable to all parties in the Israeli - Palestine conflict, will at least clearly demarcate common ground and draw the 'red lines' that may not (yet) be crossed. The result is an enormously valuable resource that cannot fail to attract the attention of anyone concerned with the future of the Mideast region

Keywords: Ethnic relations ; Jews History ; Jews Intellectual life ; Judeo-Arabic philology
Abstract: This volume deals with one of the most peculiar Jewish communities in the Diaspora, the Jews of Yemen. Their history began a long time before the advent in 622 AD of Islam. Their political and social highpoint came during the last generations of the Judaized Yemenite Kingdom of Himyar (c. 400-525). This book contains 16 studies, encompassing various aspects of Jewish existence in Yemen as a dhimmi (protected) religious minority under Islam: history, social and cultural relations with the Muslim environment, culture, literature and language. Yemenite Jewish traditions are highly esteemed in the modern spiritual and artistic life of the Jewish people both in the State of Israel and in the Diaspora. All the studies in this volume (except one written in collaboration with 'Offer Livneh) are the work of one of the leading scholars of Yemenite Jewry

Parallel Title: Erscheint auch als The Druzes in the Jewish State : A Brief History
Keywords: Druzes History ; Druzes ; Ethnic relations
Abstract: Following the war of 1948 Palestine's Druzes became part of the state of Israel. Overwhelmingly rural, they sought to safeguard their community's age-old ethnic independence by holding on to their traditional ethno-religious particularism. Ethnicity and ethnic issues, however, were ready tools for the Zionists in the pursuit of their policy aims vis-à-vis the state's Arab population. Central among these was the cooptation of part of the Druze elite in an obvious effort to alienate the Druzes from the other Arabs - creating "good" Arabs and "bad" Arabs served the Jewish state as a foil for its ongoing policy of dispossession and control. The author painstakingly documents the political, social and economic factors that ensured the "success" of these Zionist policies, but concludes that the fissured identity of Israel's Druzes today bespeaks a feeling of musiba , tragedy, within the community itself
