    Abstract: "This volume of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry consists of scholarly articles devoted to the development of Jewish historiography in three east European hubs: Congress Poland, the Russian empire, and Galicia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We have attempted to look beyond established paradigms by examining the relationship between the writing of Jewish and non-Jewish histories in eastern Europe, adding to a growing literature that seeks to transcend the trope of Jewish cultural insularity.     Abstract: Antisemitism is on the rise in Europe, sometimes manifesting in violent acts against Jews, but more commonly noticeable in everyday discourse. This innovative empirical study examines written examples of antisemitism in contemporary Germany. Drawing on 14,000 letters and e-mails sent between 2002 and 2012 to the Central Council of Jews in Germany and the Israeli embassy in Berlin, as well communications sent between 2010 and 2011 to Israeli embassies across Europe, the authors show how language plays a crucial role in activating antisemitism across a broad spectrum of social classes, investigate the role of emotions in antisemitic argumentation patterns, and analyze “anti-Israelism” as the dominant form of contemporary hatred of Jews

This biography traces her origins, her American roots, her immediate family, her failed marriage, her rise in the party, the trade union movement, her massive and enduring achievements as Secretary of Labor and Housing, her ten year stint as foreign minister and finally the reasons that led to her failure as prime minister. She was a very good tactician, far less a strategist. She was a major builder of modern Israel whose influence on that country, on Israel-American relations and on Jewish history was evident primarily from 1969 to 1974. The author who served as spokesman for Golda Meir in 1973-1974 weaves a gripping story of one of the builders and leaders of the State of Israel

    Abstract: The attitude of Jews living in the medieval Christian world to Jews who converted to Christianity or to Christians seeking to join the Jewish faith reflects the central traits that make up Jewish self-identification. Grinberg argues that historical political events have been shaped not only by political and economic forces but also by resistance struggles of marginal and weaker social groups: organized workers, Palestinians, and Mizrachi Jews. The highlight of Volume 36 of the Israel Yearbook on Human Rights is a reproduction of the full text and commentary of a new Manual relating to Non-International Armed Conflicts (prepared by a Drafting Committee under the aegis of the San Remo International Institute of Humanitarian Law). This is a sequel to the well-known San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea , published in 1995. The new Manual reflects the results of a larger Project launched by the Institute, the background papers of which were printed in full in volume 30 (2000) of the Yearbook. The sphere of non-international armed conflicts is gaining increasing importance and attention due to the growing frequency and menace of internal wars. The imperative need to come up with an authoritative restatement of the law governing these conflicts has become obvious. This is a first attempt of its kind, and it is bound to arouse interest and debate

    Abstract: The encounter of Occident and Orient is one of the major topics of our time. This encounter is the theme of the present volume in regards to the Palestinian realm from 1799 to 1948. The contributions of twelve authors from Germany, France, Israel, Italy, Austria, Russia, and Switzerland are concerned with a period in which the ordinary interest for the land of the Bible and Christian history was connected to a much greater cultural and political discourse, which was not only carried out by the western churches, but also by European societies in general. In nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Palestine, many forces were at work; from 1516/17 Palestine belonged to the Ottoman Empire. Beginning in the nineteenth century, especially after 1840, this small territory became an issue for world politics. The maintenance of the integrity of the Ottoman Empire constituted one of the guidelines of the European powers

    Abstract: The notion of human dignity plays a central role in human rights discourse. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognition of the inherent dignity and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. The international Covenants on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and on Civil and Political Rights state that all human rights derive from inherent dignity of the human person. Some modern constitutions include human dignity as a fundamental non-derogable right; others mention it as a right to be protected alongside other rights. It is not only lawyers concerned with human rights who have to contend with the concept of human dignity. The concept has been discussed by, inter alia, theologians, philosophers, and anthropologists.
